August 26, 1935 - September 25, 2023
Beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend
On September 25, 2023, Dr. Robert “Bob” Henry MacDonald, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at home with family. Bob was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 26, 1935, to Irene and William MacDonald. Bob spent his childhood in Minneapolis and also greatly loved his time at his grandparents’ farm in rural Wisconsin. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, he married Rosalyn Smith and worked for seven years in the accounting department of the Soo Line Railroad. Bob later graduated with honors from the Northwestern Chiropractic College in Minneapolis, where he was the president of his class and also president of the college fraternity, Chi Omega Phi, as well as a member of the honor society, Nu Eta Chi. Bob founded his family company, MacMed, specializing in sports injury recovery and medical devices, and worked there until his retirement. Bob and Rosy were married for 34 years and had three children together.
Bob was most passionate about sports and was a lifelong athlete. He participated in sports for high school, the Minneapolis park board, for the railroad, and for college. He coached his children in every sport they played, and he was a ranking player with the United States Tennis Association where he qualified for the senior nationals tournament in 2018. He also enjoyed playing bridge and chess and participated in a weekly bridge club for decades.
Whether most known for his humor or his kindness, Bob never met a stranger. And if you met him, you definitely remember a joke or two of his. He was happy to share his knowledge and chiropractic care with anyone in need, often free of charge or with payments in kind. His knowledge was so great that he was a lifelong Mensa Society member and could recite quotes and cite sources from any book he had ever read. He strongly believed in alternative medicine and dedicated his time to helping everyone that he could. His interests were many and ranged from World War II research to coin collecting and magic tricks.
Bob is preceded in death by his beloved parents, William and Irene (Jensen) MacDonald, sister Ardyce Haglund, brother William “Bill” MacDonald, and adored cat Midnite. He is survived by his daughter Deborah (Michael) Sangrene of Inver Grove Heights, MN, twin sons Stephen MacDonald of Spring Lake Park, MN, and Scott (Linda) MacDonald of Pollock Pines, CA; grandchildren Heather (Mike) Goodwyn, Michael (Joo) Sangrene, Matthew Sangrene, Jessica (Ross) Wachendorf, Daniel (Alisha) MacDonald, Nicole (Jonathan) Chappell; great-grandchildren Breyden and Raquel Babich, Alexandria Goodwyn, Gavin and Eve Sangrene, Mackensie and Wylder Wachendorf, Henry Sangrene, Payton, Paizley, and Paxtynn MacDonald; and great-great-granddaughter Violet Goodwyn; his cat “Buddy”; and many more nieces, nephews, and other close relatives and friends.
To them he would say, “Grandpa loves you. Proud of you.”
